As the Trees Grow — So Grow the Children

A nation’s true wealth is reflected in the expanse of its forests, the purity of its waters, the freshness of it’s air, the richness of its soil, and the breadth and depth of its care for the young and elderly. My personal and nourishing wealth lies in the vulnerable love I carry for each of these.

The Magarini Children Centre and Organic Demonstration Farm, in drought stricken and remote Kenya, offers a vision here of what such inter-nourishing relationships might look like.

The video below is a dipping in and out of the touching story of the transformational relationship between the Children and the trees within the Food Forest they are creating. It is a distillation from the 12.11.22 Friends Call.

When Children Are Trees Too!

He speaks to the value of the trees in the Food Forest… in which 800 have been planted, beginning last year. The children took on watering them by hand during drought times. Soon, the ‘trees’ were no longer just ‘trees,’ but friends. Friends with names! Friends they learn to mulch and care for beyond watering.

The children discover a reciprocal relationship with the trees wherein they are soon sitting in the shade of trees/friends now, that they once planted. Emmanuel reflects that, “If they can make good relationships with the trees they will make good relationships with people too!” He continues later…”People don’t have time to listen to trees… and so they cut and destroy the forest for charcoal….. We try to show them there is another way…”

The video title, As the Trees Grow — So Grow the Children, is a reflection upon this idea: a society that does not know how to grow and nurture the soil and trees, how to cherish clean air and water for all… will not know how to care for its children either. And as children learn to identify with nature as friend and source, as interconnected with their own well-being, they also learn to love each other and their own deep nature too. This is the gift the Centre offers to the children, and to the local community, to you and I, and to the world too: Emmanuel calls this philosophy, “peace from the soil.”
